Reading writing workshop
The new units demonstrate more of a focus on informational, persuasive writingand revision than the original unit plan developed by Calkins.
I teach the writing class. Writing workshop is an approach to writing in an authentic way that teaches the writer over teaching the writing. Once the teacher has identified an area of need, the teaching can begin.
There are half a dozen or so favorite ways to bring closure to a workshop session, and those ways of sharing repeat throughout the series. Some of the key program strategies utilized are visualization where students picture the story like a movie in their mindsstudents asking questions about the story and how it relates to them personally, predictions within the story, re-reading for comprehension, and techniques for sounding out difficult words and discerning their meanings.
They talk about literature as if they were in book clubs.
The materials used in each workshop program are more organic and less scripted than most reading and writing programs.

For example, I know my students need to write effective arguments. In education, these types of changes occur as well. I find mentor texts from my own reading and writing life. Link Work Time Students should have 35—45 minutes to work independently each day while the teacher confers and leads small groups. As the teacher moves among students, he or she will give feedback, name next steps, and help students maintain energy and momentum. During independent work time, the teacher can call back small groups, have conferences with individual students, or even form small book clubs. Benefits Having two separate programs that correlate with each other and use the same strategies is beneficial to both teachers and students. Conferring during Work Time While students work independently, the teacher moves around the classroom, trying to touch base with and respond to as many students as possible.
